YOUNG HISTORIANS HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM

Experience a different side of Oakland Cemetery with Young Historians, Historic Oakland Foundation’s educational program for homeschool students and their families. Each program will explore a special topic and offer opportunities for students to learn in the unique setting of Oakland Cemetery.

Each two-hour program includes games, fun activities, and tours designed to engage and educate. Programs are grade-appropriate and educational activities correspond to Georgia Performance Standards.

Young Historians programs are from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Programs will be held inside the Visitors Center and outside on the grounds of Oakland Cemetery.

Young Historians tickets are $6 for Historic Oakland Foundation members, $8 for non-members, and free for adults. Spaces are limited, so you must register to attend and you can purchase tickets when you arrive at the Visitors Center.

Upcoming Programs

Atlanta’s African American History (Grades 6-8) 
Wednesday, February 15
Explore Oakland Cemetery’s African American Grounds and hear the stories of people who helped shape the history of Atlanta. Discover secret symbols and solve the mystery behind grave marker meanings during a cultural treasure hunt in the African American Grounds! (Grades 6-8)

Exploring the Art and Architecture of Death 
Wednesday, March 15
From magnificent mausoleums to solemn statues, this program examines how people honor their departed loved ones through cemetery art and architecture. Bring your sketch pads and cameras to capture the beauty of Oakland’s Victorian statuary and mausoleums. (Grades 6-12)

Under Siege: The Battle for Atlanta and America’s Civil War 
Friday, April 7
The 1864 Atlanta Campaign and capture of Atlanta was considered a turning point in the Civil War. More than 6900 soldiers who fought in the bloody conflict are buried at Oakland Cemetery. We’ll learn about soldiers who fought on the front lines and Atlanta civilians who were caught in the crossfire. (Grades 4-8)

Culture Conversations 
Wednesday, May 24
Walk through Oakland Cemetery and you’ll discover the final resting places of a diverse group of people who called Atlanta “home.” This program will examine and celebrate the different cultures, religions, and social organizations represented at Oakland Cemetery.
